3 things you need before you bring your puppy home
With so many pet products out there, it can be overwhelming! To make things easier, we've simplified it down to our top 3 essential items for your puppy.
Here’s the simple list:
Short list, right?! Now we have covered what you need, let’s talk about the why you need them.
Puppies need structure, why?
Just as it is with humans, when too much freedom is given before a dog is capable of being responsible for that level of freedom, it is bound to end poorly. Far too many people give their puppies the whole world and then discover that they have created a monster. If a puppy is consistently good with a small space—no potty issues, no chewing, no barking, etc.—then feel free to expand their space. If this eats to those problems, it probably means they were given too much space too early.
The crate, leash, and schedule will be your bff :
Your crate is one of the best investments you can make for your puppy, offering a range of benefits beyond just potty training. It creates a secure, comforting space for your pup to relax, helps set clear boundaries, and plays a crucial role in establishing a consistent routine—something we’ll dive into shortly. Plus, it’s key for safe and stress-free travel with your furry friend. When your young puppy isn’t in their crate, that’s where the slip lead comes in. This simple tool is invaluable for managing your puppy during their active hours at home.
crate guidelines
Keep the crate a calm place. It is a space for them to have down time, often. If you can’t keep an eye on them, they should be in their crate. And that’s GOOD. Far too often, puppies are left out of the crate for too long, causing zoomies and overstimulation, which leads to chewing, accidents, and destruction! Puppies are babies, and need a lot of sleep. They are growing fast!
Puppy Schedule
Potty training can be among the most frustrating parts of beginning life with a new puppy. For many new puppy parents this is a deal breaker. However, follow a few simple rules and you will be handling potty training like a pro.
Feeding Schedule=Potty Schedule. When you choose to feed your dog is up to you, but 2-3 times a day is standard for a puppy. Do NOT leave food out continually for your puppy! By feeding your puppy only at certain meal times, not only will you avoid some possible behavioral issues in the future, but you will have a better chance at knowing when they need to go to the bathroom. Remember, the reason potty training takes so much patience is because you only get a few opportunities to teach it each day. You definitely want to take advantage of opportunities you get! Here is a sample schedule we use with our puppies!
The slip lead Leash
Last but not least, the leash! Using a slip leash with a young puppy offers several benefits. It allows you to maintain close control and always keep an eye on them during walks or training. The slip leash also helps with behavior correction through pressure-release training, which is a natural form of communication for them. Making it easier to guide your puppy and reinforce good habits. When we say “no” and give a quick flick of the leash, we are sending feedback, that the behavior is not acceptable.
